The Adoption Process

Children become available for adoption for a variety of reasons. Their birth parents may die unexpectedly or otherwise not be able to care for them, or they may voluntarily give their child(ren) up for adoption. In some cases, family members may be able and willing to adopt the child; in others, the child(ren) may be placed in foster care until an adoptive family is identified.

According to the National Council for Adoption, a reasonable timeframe (and national goal) for adoption is 12 months. Unfortunately, 60% of children spend at least two years in foster care waiting for a permanent family, with others spending 5+ years waiting to be adopted. In many cases, the children who wait longest are older or part of a sibling group.

YFA’s adoption staff is committed to the well-being of children who are available to be adopted into a loving and nurturing “forever family.”  Children of all ages who are available for adoption deserve a family that will provide a safe and stable environment for them, so they can reach their full potential. 

The Role of YFA’s Adoption Case Manager

YFA’s dedicated adoption staff conducts comprehensive child studies for each child who is available for adoption to:

  • Understand their unique needs, personality, and circumstances

  • Identify the characteristics of potential adoptive families who could best meet these needs

  • Create detailed profiles to aid in matching children with appropriate families

In addition to advocating for these children, the Case Manager follows best practices, including providing educational and support services for families adopting a child. The Case Manager may:

  • Offer pre-adoption counseling for children and prospective families

  • Maintain detailed documentation of each child's background, needs, and progress

  • Facilitate appropriate pre-placement visits and transitions

  • Provide ongoing support and resources to both children and prospective adoptive families

  • Offer post-adoption support services to ensure successful placement stability

  • Provide cultural competency training for adoptive families

  • Recommend support groups for adoptive parents and children

  • Share educational resources about adoption-related challenges and solutions

  • Connect adoptive parents with community resources and specialized services

  • Provide assistance with adoption subsidies and benefits when applicable

Adopting a child can be an incredibly rewarding experience, but adoptive families may face challenges as everyone “settles in.” A comprehensive approach ensures that both children and adoptive families receive the support they need throughout the adoption journey and beyond, promoting successful, stable placements and positive outcomes for all involved.

Our Beliefs

  1. Every child with adoption potential must be offered the opportunity to secure a permanent family. 

  2. Birth family connections should be preserved whenever possible. 

  3. Adoption is child-focused, prioritizing finding families that meet children's needs. 

  4. Every child with adoption as the goal is considered adoptable, contingent on finding the right family and supporting them in becoming an adoptive family. 

  5. No child should be denied the chance for a permanent adoptive family based on their age, religion, cultural or ethnic background, medical condition, genetic heritage, disability, or sexual orientation.
